Tab Islands
Start something new.
Tab Islands give it room to grow.
Begin automatically
One tab is all it takes. In Opera, tab islands form on their own, giving your idea space from the start. No setup required.
Keep projects separate
Each train of thought deserves room to grow. The islands you create stay separate, so your ideas can thrive without getting tangled.
Make room for what’s next
Inspiration can strike anytime. Collapse your islands to make room for your next idea, and expand any island when you want to return.
Move as fast as your ideas
A single thought can pull you in a dozen directions. Articles to read, links to follow, and new ideas to pursue.
Tab Islands follows your lead with zero setup, letting you create separate tab groups for each new path you take.
Make creative space
The creative process is making connections. Inspiration, references, and sketches pile up as ideas take shape over time.
Personalize each tab island with names and colors, creating dedicated space for each phase of your project.
Dig deeper
Research rarely ends with one article, and every new tab in your island adds more information and context.
Even with 20+ tabs, an entire tab island can be summarized, analyzed, and cross-checked with Opera’s built-in native AI.
Pick up where you left off
One moment you’re working, the next you’re comparing childcare options or looking at new apartments online.
Collapse Tab islands you’re not using to clear away distractions, and expand the one you want to focus on.
How to use Tab Islands
Tab Islands is enabled by default. To disable or re-enable the feature, click Easy setup (three-line icon in the top right) and toggle Automatically create tab islands.
To start a new island, click the + to the right of your tabs or press Ctrl+T. You can also select multiple tabs, then right-click and select Create tab island.
You can manually add another tab to an existing island with Alt+T, and following links opens tabs in the same island. If this doesn’t work, toggle on Automatically create tab islands in Settings (Alt+P).
Click the colored handle to collapse or expand an island. Your tabs remain grouped together until you're ready to continue.
Hover your cursor over an island's handle (the vertical color strip) to rename the tab island or change its color.
Drag and drop tabs between islands, or use the tab context menu to move one or multiple tabs to another island.
Turn on Use vertical tab strip in Easy Setup or by right-clicking any tab. Switch layouts anytime and collapse the tab strip to make more room when needed.
